Online marketplaces

Online marketplaces are consumer-facing platforms transacting between individuals or small businesses on one side and buyers on the other, distinct from first-party online retailers buying inventory on their own balance sheet. The category covers everything from horizontal classifieds like eBay and OfferUp to vertical platforms in resale fashion (Vinted, Vestiaire), sneakers and collectibles (StockX, GOAT), handmade and craft (Etsy), and peer-to-peer used goods (Mercari, Carousell). The economics differ sharply from 1P retail - the platform doesn't carry inventory but invests in trust, authentication, payments and dispute resolution to keep the marketplace functioning.

It spans horizontal C2C marketplaces, fashion resale platforms, sneaker and streetwear marketplaces, handmade and craft platforms like Etsy, classifieds and local listings, peer-to-peer used goods, and authenticated luxury and watches.

Revenue is dominated by take rates on transactional GMV (typically 5-20%), payment processing margins, promoted-listing advertising paid by sellers, authentication fees on luxury and sneaker resale, and subscription tiers for power sellers.

How online marketplaces companies monetize?

Online marketplaces monetize through GMV take rates, promoted listings and ads and authentication fees.

GMV take rate

Commission on completed transactions, typically 5-15% on horizontal platforms and 10-20% on authenticated resale. The headline revenue line at eBay, Etsy, Vinted and StockX.

Promoted listings & ads

Sellers pay for sponsored placement in search and category pages. Etsy Ads and eBay Promoted Listings are material lines; StockX and Vinted have both expanded promoted seller offerings since 2023.

Payment processing margin

Net spread on processing buyer-seller payments after card fees. Material at marketplaces operating their own payments stack - eBay's Managed Payments, MercadoLibre's Mercado Pago and Etsy Payments.

Authentication fees

Per-transaction fees on authenticated sneakers, watches, handbags and collectibles. StockX, GOAT, Vestiaire and Watchfinder all run paid authentication into the price.

Buyer protection / service fees

Fees charged to buyers on top of seller listing price. Vinted introduced a Buyer Protection fee in 2022 that materially changed its take rate; Etsy and StockX run similar lines.

Subscription tiers

Power-seller and pro tiers offering storefront tools, advanced analytics and reduced fees. eBay Stores, Etsy Plus and Mercari Pro sit here; volume is small but stickiness is high.

Sector KPIs

Key online marketplaces KPIs to track

GMV, take rate, active buyers and repeat purchase rate are the metrics investors track in online marketplaces.

KPIDefinition
GMVGross merchandise value across the marketplace. Headline scale metric for every C2C and authenticated-resale operator.
Take rateTotal marketplace revenue (including fees, ads and payments) divided by GMV. Range is roughly 12-22% for C2C marketplaces in 2024-25.
Active buyersUnique buyers transacting in the trailing 12 months. eBay, Etsy and Vinted all report this; the cleanest cross-marketplace comparison metric.
Active sellers / listingsSupply-side density. Etsy's active seller count has been the single most-watched metric since fee increases triggered a strike in 2022.
GMV per active buyerAverage annual spend per buyer. Frequency and basket-size lever; the focus for every marketplace trying to grow without paying more for traffic.
Repeat purchase rateShare of buyers placing more than one order in a window. The retention metric and the proxy for habitual marketplace behaviour.
Authentication pass rateShare of submitted items clearing authentication on resale platforms. The trust-and-safety KPI that anchors buyer confidence and the take-rate premium.
Liquidity / sell-throughShare of listed items selling within a defined window. Reads the health of the matching algorithm and seller onboarding more than supply count alone.

Key online marketplaces market trends

Vinted reaching profitability, sneaker normalisation after the COVID bubble and the Adevinta take-private are reshaping online marketplaces right now.

Vinted reaches profitability and scales

Vinted hit full-year profitability in 2023 on the back of its Buyer Protection fee introduced in 2022 and steady member growth across France, Germany, Italy and the UK. The late-2024 secondary tender valued the company at $5.4B, making it one of the few profitable European C2C marketplaces at scale. Posted dated: November 2025.

Etsy seller and buyer reset

Etsy's active buyer count peaked in 2021 and has run sideways through 2024-25 as discretionary spend softened and Temu pressured low-AOV craft and gift categories. Etsy cut active-seller fees in 2025, pushed harder on Depop and rolled out AI search to defend the marketplace. Posted dated: February 2026.

Sneakers normalise after the COVID bubble

StockX and GOAT both reset to slower GMV growth and material headcount cuts through 2023-24 as the sneaker resale bubble deflated. Both pivoted toward authenticated apparel, electronics and luxury categories; eBay's Sneaker Con acquisition (2022) integrated authentication into its core marketplace. Posted dated: October 2025.

Adevinta take-private

Permira and Blackstone closed the take-private of Adevinta (parent of Leboncoin, Mobile.de, Kleinanzeigen and others) at $13B in mid-2024. Fashion resale enters the loyalty bundle

Major brands including Lululemon, Levi's, Patagonia and Coach have launched resale programs powered by Trove or Recurate, bundling secondhand into the loyalty and DTC stack. AI authentication and listing tools

StockX, GOAT, Vestiaire and Chrono24 have invested in machine-vision authentication to compress per-item cost and shrink turnaround time. eBay and Etsy rolled out AI listing generators in 2024-25 to reduce friction for casual sellers. Posted dated: March 2026.
