Fractional CFO services in Melbourne

Melbourne is Australia's second-largest tech ecosystem and arguably its most founder-dense, with Victoria's startup community valued at AUD $143B - a 29-fold increase since 2016. The state is home to 3,800+ startups and scaleups, including 20 unicorns across fintech, healthtech and consumer software.

Airwallex, Culture Amp, Envato, Linktree and Eucalyptus are Melbourne-born; MYOB and REA Group are Melbourne-headquartered ASX-listed anchors. Cremorne - the two-kilometre Carlton-to-Cremorne corridor - has become Australia's answer to a Silicon Valley neighbourhood, housing Carsales, Culture Amp, Seek and dozens of Series B+ companies within walking distance.

We work with Melbourne-based startups from seed to Series B+, supporting them on FP&A, board packs, fundraise prep, unit economics and equity/option grants.

Melbourne startup ecosystem

What makes Melbourne's startup ecosystem distinct - sector concentrations, the Cremorne tech corridor and the talent pipeline feeding Victoria's venture scene.

Cremorne: Australia's most concentrated tech neighbourhood

The Carlton-to-Cremorne corridor - sometimes called the Silicon Valley of Melbourne - houses Culture Amp, Carsales, Seek, Envato and dozens of high-growth scaleups within a two-kilometre stretch. Collingwood and Fitzroy add a consumer and creative-tech layer. Docklands and the CBD host the fintech and enterprise-software operations tied to Melbourne's concentration of major financial services firms.

LaunchVic: the strongest state-level startup mandate in Australia

Victoria's LaunchVic was allocated AUD $40M over four years in the 2024–25 State Budget - the largest ongoing state government commitment to startup infrastructure in Australia. LaunchVic funds accelerators (Startmate, MAP, RMIT Activator), grants to new VC and angel networks, and co-investment vehicles. No other Australian state has deployed comparable institutional capital specifically for ecosystem development.

Consumer, fintech and healthtech sector anchors

Airwallex (cross-border payments, now global), Culture Amp (people analytics), Linktree (link-in-bio, 40M+ users), Up Bank (neobank, Bendigo-backed) and Eucalyptus (digital health) are all Melbourne-founded and illustrate the city's consumer-plus-SaaS-plus-fintech stack. Victoria has five homegrown fintech unicorns - Airwallex, Zeller and others - and a healthtech cluster anchored by ASX-listed Telix Pharmaceuticals, Mesoblast and PolyNovo.

Engineering and business talent from Melbourne Uni, Monash and RMIT

The University of Melbourne, Monash University and RMIT produce large cohorts of engineering, computer science and business graduates. Melbourne's investment-banking and professional-services base - ANZ and NAB headquarters, the Big Four and major consulting firms on Collins Street - feeds a secondary pipeline of experienced finance and operating talent into growth-stage companies in Cremorne and beyond.

Government and institutional support for Melbourne startups

Victoria has the deepest state-level startup support infrastructure in Australia. These are the key programmes and incentives Melbourne founders should know.

LaunchVic

LaunchVic is Victoria's state startup development agency, allocated AUD $40M in the 2024–25 State Budget to fund accelerators, new VC and angel networks, and ecosystem events. LaunchVic grants fund Startmate, the Melbourne Accelerator Program (MAP) at University of Melbourne, RMIT Activator and Birchal. It is the most active state-government startup agency in Australia.

R&D Tax Incentive (43.5% refundable)

Australia's R&D Tax Incentive provides a 43.5% refundable tax offset for eligible R&D expenditure in companies with under $20M turnover - effectively a cash refund from the ATO on qualifying technical work. For larger companies, a non-refundable 8.5–16.5% premium applies. Structuring eligible activities and expenditure correctly at early stage is a standard part of CFO engagement for Melbourne tech founders.

ESVCLP fund structure

An Early Stage Venture Capital Limited Partnership (ESVCLP) is an Australian tax structure that provides flow-through tax treatment and tax exemptions on income and capital gains for partners in qualifying VC funds. ESVCLPs must hold committed capital of AUD $10M–$200M with an Innovation Australia-approved investment plan. Many Melbourne VCs - including Blackbird and AirTree - operate ESVCLP vehicles, which affects how term sheets and investor rights are structured.

Startmate (Melbourne cohort)

Startmate is Australia's oldest and most prominent early-stage accelerator, with a strong Melbourne presence alongside its Sydney home base. LaunchVic-funded Melbourne cohorts invest AUD $120K per company in a 14-week programme covering go-to-market, hiring and fundraise preparation. Alumni include Employment Hero, Linktree and Shippit.

Melbourne Accelerator Program (MAP)

The Melbourne Accelerator Program (MAP) is a five-month equity-free programme run at the University of Melbourne with LaunchVic co-funding. Provides mentoring, office space, tailored workshops and investor introductions for early-stage founders. Particularly strong for university-IP spinouts and deep-tech founders building from Melbourne's research base.

RMIT Activator

RMIT Activator is RMIT University's entrepreneurship hub in Carlton, running the LaunchHub pre-accelerator and structured startup programmes for students, alumni and staff. Strong for hardware, design-tech and social-enterprise founders. A meaningful pipeline into the Cremorne corridor for technically trained early-stage founders.

Melbourne startup accountants vs Flow fractional CFO

Most Melbourne startups work with a chartered accounting firm for income-tax returns, GST, R&D Tax Incentive claims and ASIC lodgements. That role is essential - but it does not replace a fractional CFO.

Melbourne startup accountants

Tax returns, GST, R&DTI claims and ASIC compliance. The accounting firms most used by Melbourne venture-backed founders.

  • William Buck Melbourne

Startup-focused chartered accountants with a dedicated entrepreneurial advisory team, widely used by Melbourne seed and Series A companies for tax structuring, R&DTI preparation and equity-incentive scheme advice.

  • Pitcher Partners Melbourne

Mid-market chartered firm with a strong technology and high-growth company practice covering audit, tax and R&D Tax Incentive claims, widely used by Cremorne-corridor scaleups from seed through pre-IPO.

  • HLB Mann Judd Melbourne

Mid-market firm with a long-standing technology and emerging-company practice covering audit, advisory and R&D Tax Incentive claims for venture-backed Melbourne founders.

  • BDO Australia (Melbourne)

Top-six national firm with a large technology and growth-stage practice covering Series A through pre-IPO audit, R&DTI claims and cross-border tax structuring.

  • RSM Australia (Melbourne)

National mid-market network with a dedicated innovation and R&D team, strong across tech SMEs and venture-backed companies scaling from Melbourne's Cremorne and Docklands clusters.

Flow fractional CFO

Financial modelling, FP&A and fundraise prep. We work alongside your accountant - not instead of them.

  • Builds the financial model - revenue assumptions, headcount, unit economics, runway.
  • Sets up the monthly FP&A cycle: budget, forecast vs actual, variance analysis.
  • Puts together the monthly board pack - P&L, cash, KPIs and forward outlook.
  • Prepares the fundraise: investor model, deck financials, data room and diligence prep.
  • Keeps the cap table tidy and handles option grants and 409A-equivalent valuations.
  • Reports on the KPIs that move the business - ARR, gross margin, CAC payback, retention.
  • Pressure tests hiring, pricing and big spend decisions against the model before the founder commits.
  • Sits in board meetings and is embedded week-to-week, not just engaged annually for compliance.

No hidden costs, no complicated long-term contracts. We understand how important flexibility is for Melbourne startups.
