Fractional CFO services in Washington DC

Washington DC is the United States' dominant govtech, defense-tech and cybersecurity hub - a market shaped by $700B+ in annual federal procurement spending and the permanent presence of the intelligence community, DoD and civilian agencies.

The Northern Virginia tech corridor (Rosslyn, Reston, Tysons) is the world's largest data-centre market and the operating home for companies like Cvent, Mark43, Hyperion and the DC offices of Snowflake and ServiceNow. Revolution, QED Investors and NEA DC are the most active institutional investors in the region.

We work with Washington DC-based startups from seed to Series B+, supporting them on board packs, fundraise prep, M&A readiness, runway management, investor reporting and FP&A.

Washington DC startup ecosystem

What makes DC's startup ecosystem distinct - sector concentrations, the Northern Virginia tech corridor and the talent pipeline that feeds the region's venture scene.

The world's largest govtech and cybersecurity market

The federal government spends over $100B annually on IT procurement, and Northern Virginia hosts the global headquarters of CISA, NSA's commercial liaison programmes and the dominant cybersecurity companies - Booz Allen Hamilton, Leidos, SAIC, ManTech and hundreds of venture-backed challengers. Mark43 (public safety SaaS) and Hyperion (space analytics) are two of the region's prominent venture-backed names.

Defense-tech and intelligence community spin-outs

In-Q-Tel - the CIA's venture arm - is based in Arlington and actively backs dual-use technology companies. The region's defence-prime ecosystem (Northrop, Raytheon, L3Harris) generates a steady flow of spin-out founders and acqui-hire targets. MACH37 is the country's only cybersecurity-focused accelerator operating within the defence ecosystem.

Rosslyn, Reston and Tysons anchor the tech corridor

Rosslyn, directly across the Potomac from Georgetown, is the closest cluster to federal agencies and the IC. Reston and Tysons (20 miles west) house the largest concentration of government IT contractors, cloud infrastructure companies and data-centre operators. Amazon Web Services' second headquarters is in Arlington, which has reshaped the corridor's talent map.

Government, military and university talent pipeline

Georgetown, George Mason, University of Maryland and American University feed policy, security and engineering graduates. The region's unmatched concentration of cleared professionals - DoD, NSA, DHS alumni - creates a deep secondary talent pool for govtech and cyberscecurity companies that can absorb cleared engineers at scale.

Accelerators and angel networks active in Washington DC

DC's accelerator landscape is concentrated in govtech, cybersecurity and defence-tech - reflecting the federal procurement ecosystem that anchors the region. These are the most relevant programmes for venture-backed founders in the area.

MACH37

MACH37 is the US's only cybersecurity-focused accelerator operating within the Northern Virginia defence ecosystem, backed by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Runs two cohorts per year with access to intelligence community mentors, DoD programme offices and defence-prime BD channels. Portfolio includes Telos, Limelight Networks and 60+ cybersecurity companies.

In-Q-Tel

In-Q-Tel is the CIA-backed strategic investor based in Arlington that backs dual-use technology companies across AI, data analytics, cybersecurity, biotech and space. Not a traditional accelerator - IQT investments are strategic contracts that validate technology for the intelligence community and open federal procurement channels.

DCode

DCode is a DC-based accelerator focused exclusively on helping commercial tech companies enter the federal market. Runs a 12-week programme connecting venture-backed startups with federal agency programme managers and procurement officers. Strong in SaaS, AI and data analytics companies seeking their first government contract.

Revolution

Revolution is Steve Case's DC-based venture firm and the most prominent institutional investor in the region. Runs the Rise of the Rest seed fund backing startups outside Silicon Valley, and invests growth capital via Revolution Growth. Portfolio includes Sweetgreen, Framebridge and LivingSocial.

Halcyon

Halcyon is a DC-based social enterprise accelerator and incubator providing fellows with funding, housing and a 9-month programme. Focuses on founders addressing systemic social challenges - health, climate and economic mobility. Well-connected to DC's philanthropic capital and government partnership ecosystem.

QED Investors

QED Investors is an Alexandria-based venture firm founded by Nigel Morris (Capital One co-founder) that is one of the most active fintech investors globally. Portfolio includes Credit Karma, Nubank, Remitly and Quinto Andar. Operates as an active lead investor rather than a traditional accelerator.

Washington DC startup accountants vs Flow fractional CFO

Most DC-area startups work with a CPA firm for federal and state tax, government contract accounting and compliance. That role is essential - but it is not the same as having a fractional CFO.

DC-area startup accountants

Federal tax, government contract accounting (FAR/DCAA), state compliance and audit. The firms most used by DC-area venture-backed startups.

  • Aronson LLC

Rockville-headquartered firm with a market-leading government contracting and technology practice. Deep expertise in DCAA compliance, FAR cost accounting and SBIR grant accounting for defence-tech and govtech startups.

  • Citrin Cooperman

Top-20 US firm with a strong DC-area presence. Dedicated technology and venture-backed company practice covering Series A through pre-IPO, with government contracting and M&A advisory capabilities.

  • FORVIS Mazars

Formed from the merger of BKD and Dixon Hughes Goodman, FORVIS Mazars has a large DC-area practice with strength in government, healthcare IT and professional services for mid-market and growth-stage companies.

  • CohnReznick DC

Top-15 US firm with a dedicated DC-area practice. Strong in government contracting, technology and real estate. Serves venture-backed companies from Series A through growth equity and M&A exits.

  • Marcum DC

National top-20 firm with an active DC-area technology and venture-backed company practice. Covers audit, tax, government contract compliance and deal advisory for startups scaling in the federal market.

Flow fractional CFO

Financial modelling, FP&A and fundraise prep. We work alongside your accountant - not instead of them.

  • Builds the financial model - revenue assumptions, headcount, unit economics, runway.
  • Sets up the monthly FP&A cycle: budget, forecast vs actual, variance analysis.
  • Puts together the monthly board pack - P&L, cash, KPIs and forward outlook.
  • Prepares the fundraise: investor model, deck financials, data room and diligence prep.
  • Keeps the cap table tidy and handles stock option grants and 409A valuations.
  • Reports on the KPIs that move the business - ARR, gross margin, CAC payback, retention.
  • Pressure tests hiring, pricing and big spend decisions against the model before the founder commits.
  • Sits in board meetings and is embedded week-to-week, not just engaged annually for compliance.

No hidden costs, no complicated long-term contracts. We understand how important flexibility is for Washington DC startups.
