Fractional CFO services in Johannesburg
Johannesburg is sub-Saharan Africa's largest financial centre, home to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange - the continent's biggest exchange by market cap - and the headquarters of FirstRand, Absa, Standard Bank, Nedbank and Investec.
The city's tech ecosystem produced five unicorns - Yoco, Naked Insurance, Lulalend, Carry1st and Aerobotics collectively represent the breadth of the city's venture activity - and the AlphaCode club backed by Rand Merchant Investments has seeded over 50 fintech ventures from its Sandton base.
We work with Johannesburg-based startups from seed to Series B+, supporting them on board packs, unit economics, financial modelling, fundraise prep and investor reporting.

Africa's financial capital
Johannesburg accounts for roughly 16% of Africa's GDP and hosts the headquarters of every major South African bank and insurer. The JSE, South Africa's National Payments System and the deep institutional LP base of local pension funds create an unusually dense financial infrastructure for fintech and insurtech founders to build against. Naspers/Prosus - the continent's largest tech investor - is headquartered in the city.
Fintech, insurtech and B2B SaaS lead
Fintech dominates deal flow, anchored by Yoco (merchant payments, $83M raised), Lulalend (SME lending, acquired by TymeBank) and Mama Money (remittances). Insurtech has produced Naked Insurance, Africa's first fully AI-underwritten personal lines insurer. B2B SaaS and agri-tech - Aerobotics, Carry1st, AgrigateOne - represent the next tier of venture activity.
Sandton, Rosebank, Bryanston and Maboneng
Sandton's CBD is home to the JSE, AlphaCode's fintech clubhouse and the Johannesburg offices of every major bank and VC. Rosebank houses the Standard Bank Founders incubator and numerous co-working campuses. Bryanston is the Naspers/Prosus operational corridor. Maboneng in the inner city is the creative-tech cluster, hosting artists, developers and early-stage product studios.
Wits and university talent pipeline
The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) produces the deepest engineering, computer science and actuarial pipeline in the city. The University of Johannesburg and the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) supply MBA and finance graduates. Johannesburg's large base of ex-Goldman Sachs, Bain, McKinsey South Africa and Big Four alumni provides a dense secondary pool of CFO-grade operating talent.
Active venture investors in Johannesburg
Johannesburg's venture landscape is anchored by corporate-backed programmes and specialist VC firms with deep networks across South Africa and the continent. These are the most active investors backing Johannesburg founders from seed through Series B.
AlphaCode (Rand Merchant Investments)
AlphaCode is RMI's fintech incubation and investment club, operating from Sandton and backing next-generation financial services companies. The programme offers equity-free membership, access to the RMI financial services portfolio (Discovery, OUTsurance, Merchant Capital) and co-investment pathways. Portfolio includes AgrigateOne, Merchant Capital and a pipeline of sub-Saharan fintech founders.
Knife Capital
Knife Capital is South Africa's most established growth-equity VC, co-founded by Keet van Zyl, with offices in Johannesburg, Cape Town, London and Jersey. Focuses on innovation-driven companies with proven traction, investing from Series A through growth rounds. Portfolio includes Aerobotics (acquired by John Deere), Skynamo and Jumo.
Kalon Venture Partners
Kalon Venture Partners is a Johannesburg-based VC firm investing in early- and growth-stage technology companies across Southern Africa. Registered as a Section 12J VCC, Kalon focuses on fintech, insurtech and enterprise SaaS. Portfolio includes Lumkani, Finchat and Franc.
Naspers / Prosus
Prosus, Naspers' international internet arm, is headquartered in Johannesburg and is sub-Saharan Africa's most prolific tech investor by capital deployed. While Prosus primarily backs later-stage and growth rounds globally (Swiggy, PayU, Stack Overflow), its South African operations channel funding into local fintech and edtech through corporate venture and programme-backed initiatives.
Newtown Partners
Newtown Partners is a Johannesburg-based seed and early-stage VC co-founded by Vinny Lingham and Llew Claasen. Invests in fintech, blockchain and emerging-market software with a strong cross-border thesis between South Africa, the US and sub-Saharan Africa. Portfolio includes Civic (acquired) and several pan-African fintech ventures.
Standard Bank Incubator
Standard Bank Incubator operates from Rosebank, Johannesburg, and supports early-stage founders building in fintech, payments and financial inclusion. Backed by Standard Bank's continental network across 20 African markets, the programme offers mentorship, corporate partnership introductions and co-investment access for selected cohorts.
Johannesburg startups that have set the benchmark
These Johannesburg-founded or headquartered companies demonstrate the city's venture depth - from fintech exits to agri-tech and gaming infrastructure at scale.
Yoco
Yoco is South Africa's leading SME payments company, processing over $2 billion in annual transaction volume for 200,000+ merchants. Founded in 2013 and headquartered in Johannesburg, Yoco has raised $83M from Dragoneer, Breyer Capital and others. A benchmark fintech exit trajectory for the city's ecosystem.
Naked Insurance
Naked Insurance is Africa's first fully AI-underwritten personal lines insurer, built on a zero-commission direct model. Founded in Johannesburg in 2018, Naked's flat-fee structure and instant claims processing have made it the reference case for Africa's insurtech sector. Backed by Hollard, Yellowwoods and international impact investors.
Carry1st
Carry1st is Africa's leading mobile games publisher and payments infrastructure company, enabling developers to monetise across 45 African markets. Johannesburg-based and backed by Andreessen Horowitz, Google and Sony Interactive Entertainment. Raised $27M Series B, demonstrating institutional appetite for Africa's mobile-first consumer stack.
Aerobotics
Aerobotics is an AI-powered precision agriculture platform that uses aerial and ground-level imagery to detect crop stress, disease and yield variance for tree-fruit farmers. Cape Town-rooted but Johannesburg-scaled and backed by Knife Capital before its acquisition by John Deere in 2021 - the city's marquee tech exit of that period.
Mama Money
Mama Money is a Johannesburg-based mobile money transfer service built for migrant workers sending remittances to Zimbabwe, Zambia and Mozambique. Founded in 2015 and backed by IFC, Mama Money processes millions of ZAR annually with a zero-fee-or-best-rate model targeting South Africa's 3M+ documented migrant population.
Lulalend / Lula
Lula (formerly Lulalend) is a Johannesburg-based SME working-capital lender that uses cashflow data to underwrite loans without collateral. Founded in 2014, raised $35M from IFC and Quona Capital, and was acquired by TymeBank in 2023 - one of South Africa's defining fintech trade-sale exits.
