Fractional CFO services in Vancouver

Vancouver is Canada's third-largest tech ecosystem and North America's recognised cleantech capital - the city raised CAD $1.4B in venture funding in 2024, up 35% year-on-year, with cleantech accounting for 30% of all activity.

Beyond sustainability, Vancouver is the world's third-largest video game development hub (Electronic Arts' largest studio, Microsoft's The Coalition, Relic Entertainment) and a significant base for SaaS companies including Hootsuite, Visier and Trulioo.

We work with Vancouver-based startups from seed to Series B+, supporting them on FP&A, fundraise prep, cap table management, KPI tracking, unit economics and monthly close.

Vancouver startup ecosystem

What makes Vancouver's startup ecosystem distinct - sector concentrations, tech clusters across the city and the talent pipeline feeding its venture scene.

North America's cleantech capital

Startup Genome ranks Vancouver as North America's top cleantech and climate-tech ecosystem. Foresight Canada - the country's cleantech adoption accelerator - pipelines founders into venture-ready companies, and nearly half of the 2025 Foresight 50 list came from Greater Vancouver. Cleantech companies collectively raised over CAD $545M through Foresight's network.

Gaming, SaaS and digital health anchors

Hootsuite, Visier, Trulioo and Galvanize (acquired by Diligent) anchor the B2B SaaS layer. EA, Relic and The Coalition anchor the gaming cluster that employs 10,000+ developers. Hims & Hers, Mednow and Carebook represent the growing digital-health layer, supported by BC Cancer Agency and UBC Health's clinical networks.

Yaletown, Mount Pleasant and False Creek Flats clusters

Yaletown hosts the dense SaaS and fintech concentration along the False Creek waterfront. Mount Pleasant has emerged as the creative-tech and cleantech cluster - Creative BC, Emily Carr and several climate-software companies are rooted here. False Creek Flats (the 'Innovation Precinct') anchors biotech, cleantech hardware and advanced manufacturing.

Engineering talent from UBC, SFU and BCIT

UBC's entrepreneurship@UBC programme and SFU's Beedie School of Business produce the core engineering and commerce pipeline. BCIT feeds applied-tech and operations talent. The city's strong consulting presence - Deloitte, KPMG and MNP's BC technology practices - provides a secondary supply of senior finance talent for scale-ups.

Accelerators and angel networks active in Vancouver

Vancouver has a focused set of accelerators with genuine domain depth in cleantech and SaaS. These are the programmes most relevant to founders raising at pre-seed and seed in the city.

Foresight Canada

Foresight Canada is Canada's cleantech adoption accelerator, funded in part by the federal government and NRC-IRAP. It runs cohort programmes for clean energy, circular economy and agritech founders, connecting them to large industrial buyers and project-finance capital. Foresight 50 alumni have collectively raised CAD $545M+.

entrepreneurship@UBC

entrepreneurship@UBC supports founders from across UBC's faculties - from Sauder business graduates to engineering and life-sciences researchers. The e@UBC Launch Pad programme provides pre-seed funding, co-working space and mentorship. Strong pipeline into cleantech, biotech and SaaS startups.

Spring Activator

Spring Activator runs accelerator programmes focused on impact and mission-driven businesses across clean economy, circular economy and social enterprise. Vancouver-headquartered with national cohorts, it offers equity and revenue-share investment structures alongside grant pathways.

Launch Academy

Launch Academy is Vancouver's community-driven startup hub, co-working space and early-stage network with 15+ communities across the tech ecosystem. It is the convening layer for founder meetups, angel access and peer networks - particularly useful for international founders landing in Vancouver.

Innovate BC

Innovate BC is the provincial government's innovation agency, administering the BC Tech Fund, the Ignite programme and the BC Founders Fund. It connects tech companies to provincial grant programmes and SR&ED supplementary credits. The BC Interactive Digital Media Tax Credit (17.5% on eligible labour) is a major non-dilutive source for gaming and digital-media founders specifically.

NVBC (New Ventures BC)

New Ventures BC runs BC's longest-running startup competition and mentorship programme, with over CAD $6M distributed in prizes and investment since 2003. The NVBC competition provides non-dilutive capital and deep mentorship from BC's senior technology executive community.

Vancouver startup accountants vs Flow fractional CFO

Most Vancouver startups work with a CPA firm for T2 corporate tax, GST/PST filings, payroll and SR&ED claim preparation. That role is essential - but it does not replace a fractional CFO.

Vancouver startup CPAs

Corporate tax, SR&ED claims, GST/PST and payroll. The CPA firms most used by Vancouver venture-backed startups.

  • Manning Elliott LLP

One of BC's largest independent CPA firms with deep experience in private-company and owner-managed businesses across tech, resource and professional services sectors.

  • KPMG Vancouver

Big-Four coverage for Vancouver scale-ups approaching Series B and pre-IPO, with the largest CPA presence in BC at 12 locations and 1,200+ professionals.

  • MNP Vancouver

Canada's fifth-largest national firm with 23 BC locations, used by mid-market tech companies for SR&ED structuring, cross-border tax and growth-stage advisory.

  • Smythe LLP

Mid-market Vancouver-based CPA firm with a technology and venture-backed company practice, covering audit, SR&ED claims and cross-border US structuring.

  • DMCL Chartered Professional Accountants

Vancouver-headquartered CPA firm with an established private-company and high-growth tech practice, offering audit, tax and corporate finance advisory.

Flow fractional CFO

Financial modelling, FP&A and fundraise prep. We work alongside your CPA - not instead of them.

  • Builds the financial model - revenue assumptions, headcount, unit economics, runway.
  • Sets up the monthly FP&A cycle: budget, forecast vs actual, variance analysis.
  • Puts together the monthly board pack - P&L, cash, KPIs and forward outlook.
  • Prepares the fundraise: investor model, deck financials, data room and diligence prep.
  • Keeps the cap table tidy and handles stock option grants and 409A-equivalent valuations.
  • Reports on the KPIs that move the business - ARR, gross margin, CAC payback, retention.
  • Pressure tests hiring, pricing and big spend decisions against the model before the founder commits.
  • Sits in board meetings and is embedded week-to-week, not just engaged annually for compliance.

Simple pricing

No hidden costs, no complicated long-term contracts. We understand how important flexibility is for Vancouver startups.
